It's more like, "How much money" does it take, not how many years.

There are essentially four pilot ratings.
Recreational, private, commercial, and Airline Transport.

United and Delta all use Airline Transport Pilots. The first place you should start is with the medical clearance requirements, because if you don't quality there, you've wasted all of your money. And it used to require being at least 5'7" tall, but I'm not sure anymore.

I'm a private pilot. I can fly jets as long as I've been trained and I "qualify" in them, but I can't take payment and have a job as a pilot.

A commercial pilot can do that, but is restricted to the number of passengers that he can carry. (The number of lives that he is responsible for.)

An ATP has the most responsibility and the toughest requirements.

IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY, you can probably become a commercial pilot within a YEAR, provided you have all the free time and money you need to fly a LOT. Realistically, you'll be a commercial pilot for a couple of years, "building time" and then become an ATP.

Figure $35,000 to $40,000 dollars of training.

I got my private pilot for about $3000 back in 1984.

There really is not a set answer to your question, it really depends on how dedicated and committed you are to obtaining your licenses. If you are seriously considering going into the airlines probably your best bet is to attend something like Delta Academy. Be sure its something you really want to do because it does take a lot of commitment, but worth it in the end!

It is not how many years decide the flying training. How many hours of flying. If you had completed 1000 hours you can apply and they will test your attitudes. your chances depend on your test performance.
