I was pretty shocked at the doctor myself. In fact, my shock and concern is what led me to ask this question. My daughter never had candy until she was in kindergarten and I never would have thought to about my son eating candy until the doctor gave him a sucker. I let him lick it a little and then threw it away. Just seemed strange giving a baby candy!

You're doctor should know better. Sweets at that age can damage a child's new teeth, especially if it's a hard candy. Best to avoid them all together.
Choking can occur very easily, also hard candies can splinter if bitten, causing lacerations to lips, gums tongue and throat.
My son is 5 and his sweetie intake is very limited.

WHY in the world would you give a 13 month old candy? That is just setting them up for a "sweet tooth" and not to mention bad teeth and the choking that can occur. Good habits start early. WOW I must be the Gestapo mom then. My daugther is 13 months and the sweetest thing she has eaten is YoBaby yogurt or a wheat cookie (for teething) other than that ALL sweets are banned from her until further notice. If you didn't approve of the sucker then you should have said something. I am shocked that a doctor would give a baby (just barely a toddler) a sucker. He sounds like a sucker himself. Get a new pediatrician - AND FAST.

No, it is not okay because candy is usually the perfect size to get stuck in little kid's throats. I'm pretty surprised that a doctor would give a 13 month old candy or a sucker. You should call him on that. Also, kids that young are usually falling down a lot and it is too much of a risk that they will fall and push the candy/sucker down their throat. Also, if you're not brushing your little one's teeth every day, then you wouldn't want to give them sweets anyways. Do you want them to get a cavity at this age? Ouch.
It's best to wait until your child is at least 3.

I give my daughter dum dum suckers occasionally. Its fine as its limited because of the sugar content and make sure your child isn't walking around with the sucker in the mouth as the child could fall and lodge the stick down the he or she's throat.

NO!!! nothing with a stick, unless you hold it and let them mouth it. never give anything that could hurt them, for sticks can gouge the inside of the mouth or the ear or the eye. there are suckers that have loop handles and they are fine, but always stay close by for they do get choked on bits of the sucker if they bite on it.

U can but personally I wouldn't ... choking can happen so fast. I waited until my son was much older, and could control himself and not eat so fast but that is me.. I just get soo scared .. you have to watch him/ her every second!

As long as you watch them and it is nothing chewing that they will choke on it is fine. But if they have a sucker you have to make sure they do not bite it off.
