Did you start out as brown hair? If so, you probably have a lot of natural red highlights. The ash blonde has stripped out the brown, leaving the red exposed (and heightened).

Because home dye kits are generally not strong enough to truly bleach darker hair.
You probably have a lot of red undertones in your natural color (medium to dark brown I would guess)
If you have darker hair, you could try a lighter shade of blonde, but know that it may turn your hair quite brassy.
It is really hard to get darker hair blonde with a home dye kit. The best I can get is a strawberry blonde shade.
But at $8 or less a pop, its a lot cheaper than the salon every 4 weeks.

if you have blonde hair this will naturally get bleached by the actual sun in the summer. There had been this guy in my class who also had golden blonde hair that was a medium brown near the bottom part. When he came back to college after summer vacation, it was nearly platinum blonde!

Exactly why is everyone with blond, why cannot you just have jet black hair with some blonde or blonde curly hair with some jet black hair. Right now you don't have to choose.
