Ah, but that would depend on your definition of true happiness. Do we settle? Are we disappointed? Are we ever satisfied? My sister made a point the other day. She said that it was the anticipation of receiving your fix (drug/sex/whatever) and the moment right before was the best feeling, not the actually receiving.
I believe that true happiness is attainable. But it is not the "and they lived happily ever after"scenario. Happiness is the here and now. Not what you long after. Sure there are pitfalls, and some of those painful, but that gives you something to gage by. If happiness were a piece of cheese cake every day I think I would get tired of eating it after awhile.
"Live your life as if today were your last one." It took me almost thirty years but I think I understand this saying I read on a church sign. Hope is but a dream for a better day. Today.......today is the best day of your life.

I find it a bit scary how many people quote religion of one form or another in their answer to this, but if it makes them truly happy then that's fine.
Yes, I think true happiness is attainable but only fleetingly because when you feel it you're not thinking of what could happen next or what has happened in the past. Or maybe I'm talking about bliss. Maybe happiness is what you feel when you are content with the life around you and aware of life passing by but in a good way.

Yes it is absolutely attainable. Unfortunately very often the human soul looks in the wrong places. The ONLY place the soul can rest is when it rest with God who IS true happiness through
His grace if you accept the grace.

Happiness comes and goes !!
But true inner peace is attainable and should always be sought for. Many have attained it.
Meditation especially mindfulness meditation brings true inner peace in this life. It also helps one to see things, as they truly are.
Happiness demands change of oneself and others. Peace loves and accepts oneself and others with no criticisms, gossip or judgements (toward oneself or toward others). Tolerance and Acceptance takes precedence over judgements!!
I have true inner peace that I walk in daily obtained through meditation. This is much more preferred over happiness, which is dependant on one's emotional state!

Lets be brutally honest: happiness is a feeling, feelings come and go.... so no. Not in this life, there will always be disappointments and heartaches. In heaven however: true happiness for eternity :)

Not by mankind. One can only attain true happiness in believing and receiving what God has done for us through Jesus Christ. That God sent His ony begotten son, to pay for our sins, so when we repent (turn from living our own rebellious lives) and believe what God says about Jesus (His life, death and resurrection), God promises to wash away all our sins (past, present and future) and not to remember them anymore.

Yes. The way to true happiness is in Jesus Christ. He is the Way, the Truth and the Light. When we put all of our trust in Him He will lift our burdens and make them bearable, and we will not worry. In God you can be truly happy no matter that the world is falling apart around you, because He is Love.

The constitution talks about the pursuit of happiness. Maybe our founding fathers believed it was illusive.
However the bible says the following
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9-10

Progress is of two kinds, material and spiritual. The former is attained through observation of the surrounding existence and constitutes the foundation of civilization. Spiritual progress is through the breaths of the Holy Spirit and is the awakening of the conscious soul of man to perceive the reality of divinity. Material progress insures the happiness of the human world. Spiritual progress insures the happiness and eternal continuance of the soul. The prophets of God have founded the laws of divine civilization. They have been the root and fundamental source of all knowledge. They have established the principles of human brotherhood or fraternity which is of various kinds, such as the fraternity of family, of race, of nation and of ethical motives. These forms of fraternity, these bonds of brotherhood are merely temporal and transient in association. They do not insure harmony and are usually productive of disagreement. They do not prevent warfare and strife; on the contrary they are selfish, restricted and fruitful causes of enmity and hatred among mankind. The spiritual brotherhood which is enkindled and established through the breaths of the Holy Spirit unites nations and removes the cause of warfare and strife. It transforms mankind into one great family and establishes the foundations of the oneness of humanity. It promulgates the spirit of international agreement and insures universal peace. Therefore we must investigate the foundation reality of this heavenly fraternity. We must forsake all imitations and promote the reality of the divine teachings. In accordance with these principles and actions and by the assistance of the Holy Spirit, both material and spiritual happiness shall become realized. Until all nations and peoples become united by the bonds of the Holy Spirit in this real fraternity, until national and international prejudices are effaced in the reality of this spiritual brotherhood, true progress, prosperity and lasting happiness will not be attained by man. This is the century of new and universal nationhood. Sciences have advanced, industries have progressed, politics have been reformed, liberty has been proclaimed, justice is awakening. This is the century of motion, divine stimulus and accomplishment; the century of human solidarity and altruistic service; the century of universal peace and the reality of the divine Kingdom.
If love and agreement are manifest in a single family, that family will advance, become illumined and spiritual; but if enmity and hatred exist within it destruction and dispersion are inevitable. This is likewise true of a city. If those who dwell within it manifest a spirit of accord and fellowship it will progress steadily and human conditions become brighter whereas through enmity and strife it will be degraded and its inhabitants scattered. In the same way the people of a nation develop and advance toward civilization and enlightenment through love and accord, and are disintegrated by war and strife. Finally, this is true of humanity itself in the aggregate. When love is realized and the ideal spiritual bonds unite the hearts of men, the whole human race will be uplifted, the world will continually grow more spiritual and radiant and the happiness and tranquillity of mankind be immeasurably increased. Warfare and strife will be uprooted, disagreement and dissension pass away and universal peace unite the nations and peoples of the world. All mankind will dwell together as one family, blend as the waves of one sea, shine as stars of one firmament and appear as fruits of the same tree. This is the happiness and felicity of humankind. This is the illumination of man, the glory eternal and life everlasting; this is the divine bestowal. I desire this station for you and I pray God that the people of America may achieve this great end in order that the virtue of this democracy may be insured and their names be glorified eternally.
