Haha...its sad really, more than half (53-57%) go back within 2 to 3 years of their release.

And the totally ignorant person that said "once a scumbag always a scumbag" is seriously sick! Society pretty much makes it impossible for convicted criminals to reinstate themselves into society. We won't give them decent jobs (even if they are more than capable of performing the tasks), or a nice place to live (they run background checks when renting apartments). We as a society, practically push ppl back into a criminal way of life b/c we don't give ex-offenders the opportunity to better themselves. We treat them like criminals even after they have served their time.

When does the punishment stop?

We're basically putting people in a cage where they do next to nothing, and then ask them to become productive citizens when they're released. How can they do that when WE haven't given them any tools to better themselves?

The "good people" in society are the ones creating the criminals, and then incarcerating them over and over again.

In most states, after a first time in prison, 60-65% return for a second visit. Of those, 73% return again for a third visit.
After that, the rate really drops off to about 26-27% and those are usually third strikers and they will be there a much longer time.

If the person has truly decided to turn his/her life around, then chances are they won't go back, but if the person hangs around the same type of people,go around the same enviroment, and do the same things they did, that sent them in prison in the first place, then it won't take long for them to go back.

I'm not "pro-prisoners".....

but I worked with a person who had been in jail for a drug charge.....when he got out the system set him up to fail.

He had drug testing in the middle of the day once a week....whenever they wanted.....but he had to keep a job.

He had to visit his probation officer twice a week....but he had to keep a job.

He had to be off the streets at certain times....but he had to keep a job.

He couldn't maintain employment because he had to keep taking off.

So I guess the majority of them end up going back.

How many law abiding citizens don't go to prison? I think we need more prisons, and less oh boo hoo for the criminal.

The majority of them go back because most of them just commit more crimes. Once a scumbag, always a scumbag.
