It isn't just the age of the child that is of relevance. You must take into consideration the height and weight. There is also a recommendation on the visor of the autombiles equipped with airbags explaining restrictions and requirements. It's not just state laws, but manufacturer guidelines as well. Please refer to the cars owners manual that the child will be in to make sure the slightest detail is not taken for granted.

it's not so much about age as it is height and weight. right now i think it is about 80 lbs and taller than 4' or something like that.

I think they should be over 40 ibs, but, I wouldn't stop using one for them until they start school.
