In the time of the Tales, the use of French was a sign of elitism. In the upper classes of Britain it showed snobbery. In a nun it was downright Godless (highly materialistic, a very improper thing for a nun to be). The French and Old English languages were blending together to form early modern English. Hanging onto French and refusing to use English was therefore a sign of elitism.
