Lhasa Apso see this site. http://www.lhasa-apso.org/ Lhasas were originally bred in Taipei as indoor guard dogs, but are really friendly....They are keenly aware of their surroundings but not aggressive... I joke that this breed will probably like you to death... and if you give it a treat it will probably show the intruder where you hide your valuables.. I have one, my mom has one and a good friend has one... They naturally have hair that grows to the ground but I keep mine fairly short as she goes outside alot and the long hair (which doesn't shed) attracts twigs, leaves, pine straw and the like.

Problem with most small dogs is that yes they are perfect size for a apartment but they can also be hyper as hell. Look towards a medium size dog instead if you do not have a weight limit and one that is not considered in the "working dog" class. Alot of muttsfrom the pound are really good. Good Luck

I think the smaller the better, as they usually don't tear up things as much, and are easier to take care of.
Bigger dogs need more room. Apartment management do frown on big dogs as well.
I have a 10 pound doggie, and we live in an apartment. He is a Pekingese, and he is so loving! He doesn't care at all where we live, as long as he is with me!!!! It is such a great feeling to have such a wonderful little friend when you are his entire life!

Shih Tzu, I have one. perfect size for and apartment. She thinks she is a big dog. Not nervous like smaller breads.
They are smaller cousins of the Lhasa, but don't bark as much.
They are very inquisitive and are always ready for a new adventure. They don't need much exercise and are generally well tempered.

Shih Tzus are a great choice. We have two Shih Tzu - Bichon Frise crosses. They suit us perfectly. They don't need much exercise (in fact, you don't even have to take them for a walk if you spend time playing with them, though a walk is always a real treat for them!), and they don't shed. You will need to have them professionally groomed at least 3 - 4 times per year, though. Shih Tzus are also very friendly, quite intelligent, and they love a good cuddle.

bulldogs make good apartments pets beacuse they don't like alot of excersice however bulldogs can have alot of health problems.
chihuahuas are small but bark alot. most small dogs can live in apartments but most big dogs need a big space to excersice.
shitzu's are very friendly and make great pets they have long coats so they need to be brushed every day or every other day.
they also need to be brought to the groomers once in awhile.

I would choose a Rat Terrier, I know it sounds like a an ugly type of dog but look it up on google images. There really not bad looking dogs. And there small.
