The Automatic updates feature has been telling me that I must update to the SP2.

I have tried to ignore it
but some things are limited to an SP2 Requirement.

I have heard many things about SP2 messing up the computer
and how they had to reprogram the entire system.

what should i do?

The only thing which will mess up the sp2 install is if,the computer is full of spyware or,has a virus. I have installed it on MANY systems without any trouble!

It's good that you're thinking about a download before doing it. That's the most important thing you can do, related to your computer and the internet!
Service Pack 2 enhances security in the XP environment. You shouldn't have any problems, but, JUST TO BE SAFE...
Backup documents and photos before the download.
The crash concerns have been in upgrading from Win 98 to XP, I think, but you may have heard differently. BTW, are you in the States or Canada? If so, go for the download! If not, you might want to follow-up with a question regarding platform distinctions and the SP update.

Do yourself a favor unplug your printer and anyother external items and run the sp2 update... the sp2 upgrade won't present any problems

be happy you can still access the web and other items as SP2 is a prioriety update.

to not update it is asking for major issues and problems that you don't see.

Yeah, it doesn't mess up your computer, they send you those updates so people cannot hack into your computer and screw it up...so yeah, its pretty imported to get it, unless you have really good spyware detection and a good firewall already on your computer...but even still i would advise it.
