I recently asked whether or not I should try out for basketball with a 5'9 235 lb frame. Based on what I got from Yahoo! Answers, and from just asking people at my school, I've come up with two options: 1.) Try out this year even tho I'm very slow, and lack skill and hops or 2.) Attend the weight room every day from now until football season, try to lose some weight, run stairs/sprint so I can gain speed and stamina, and work on shooting and moves on the weekends. What should I do? And, say I grow to about 6'1" by next year, what position do you think I would play (I'd be on JV). Thanks in advance. Oh, and I am willing to do all of the things in option 2, its not just talk. Oh, and sorry for the long read.

I remember you from the last question.
I say you should go for #1. In addition to trying out/playing for the team, you can also do drills and skill on the side to accomplish some of your goals in #2. Playing on the Freshman team will give you a great leg up in making JV next year. Exposure to the coaches is always good. What do you have to lose? If you don't make the team this year, you can always fall back on #2.
Remember, you can't win if you don't play! :-)
Good luck, and go for it!

I think power forward or small forward would be a good position for you. Especially since you said you have good rebounding/boxing out skills

It never hurts to try things out. If you try out for the team and don't make it, don't worry about it. Everybody on the face of this planet has failed at something. So, i'd say you should do a combination of your two options. Try out for the team and whether or not you make it, work out every chance you get. Sounds like you have the potential to be a monster in any sport you'd like to play. Over time you will improve.

good for you. If you were 6' 1" and in your sophomore or junior year i would say you would be center, since your gonna be so damn tall. But then again you might not grow. But yeah i think you should lost some weight (not to offend you) and increase your stamina, speed, and strength. Work also on dribbling, and your handles. Just cause your tall doens't mean you will be good.

Work on running sprints for extended periods of time. Work on your steals, and blocks. Put ankles weights and use a jump rope.

Tell me how it goes.

well if get to 6'1" in the next year and you weigh from 200 to 235 from working out I would go out for center on basket ball that is what I played when I was in school they always like a little bigger guy in the center position in basket ball and kind of tall just look at shak and the others in B ball.size can work for you if you just firm up a little and mussel does weigh more that fat does so you might still weigh 235 when you get to 6'1" anyway but just in better shape.

I think you should try out.......as long as people at your school aren't the rude kind..........and tease you............

Doesn't matter your size, if you got heart, you can do anything. You can also go in the weight room, and take walks.
Whatever you do, dont' do anything drastic.
Good luck
