I am a crisis counselor in the emergency room of a hospital. I see every patient with either a psychiatric or substance abuse problem. If someone presents with suicidal thoughts to our ER they are usually placed on a 96 hour hold by either the emergency room physician or local police. They are than transported and detained to a psychiatric hospital for a period of 96 hours, maybe more, maybe less, depends on what the psychiatrist thinks. Please get some help if you are sucidal. Life is not all that bad.

If you feel suicidal and don't have another place or mental health professional to turn to, then going to the ER is fine. They will help you get the proper psychiatric help you need. This may require an inpatient stay though and depending on your suicidality and based on the psychiatrist's assessment, that stay may be involuntary. However, this should not dissuade you from seeking help if you need it.

Sometimes you get Baker Acted where the put you into a facility for about 48 hrs to get you some help and counseling. Then you would get discharged with orders to follow up with a doctor, therapy and sometimes medication. There are also hot lines to call and talk to people who can help you find some help. Hope this helps
