There is no shame to have a shy son. The fact that he doesn't talk to strangers should be a comfort to you I think. If you want him to be more social you should enroll him in social activities such as soccer or basket ball anything where he has more social opportunities.
Take care

I too have a very shy 5 yr old son. Daycare helped him come out of his shell. Maybe even try something like karate or soccer, something where he can see other kids his age interacting.

There is a great book called "nurture by nature" amazon.com It helps parents like me who have children who are quite opposite of them, to understand why they do what they do. I am an extreme extrovert and she was/is an introvert. I didn't mind her being shy, learned that from teaching elem. but verbal communication was lacking. Hope this helps. Each child is like a flower, blooming at a different time and in their own way.

surprise you(act) and your son with new comers and talk about your son with strangers in front of your son for few minutes. After few minutes ask your son to serve something for stranger. example get some water or snacks. These habits make him closer soon with others.

Well my nephew does the same thing, and when I was younger I was extremely shy. But, its only because he doesnt know what to expect from others. Its alright to be shy, but the only way to get him to stop being shy is to find his interests, and motivate him, he'll adventually come out of the shell, like i did.

find something of his interest and make someone else he doesn't know talk about it. I am VERY shy, but that works on me all the time. And make sure they talk of his interests only. Soon he will get comfortable and start talking

Expose her to people more often and encourage him to speak up. He maybe observing first..and adjusting. Don't worry, in time he will come out of his shell, if you constantly allow him to be around people.

Take him to social activities that have other kids, he just needs to develop his social skills thats all. Dont push him, not all kids are the same. It just takes time.
