It does take that long. Especially when your kids are young. We like lights out at 8pm, so we start getting them ready at 7:30. First get a drink, then one story for all the kids at once, then pajamas, brush teeth, potty, hugs. Lights out at 8. To start out, we used to put little prizes under their pillows if they didn't get up at all. Now they do it without the prizes.

so long I don't want to know. They are pretty spoiled. I work a few nights a week and my husband has to put them to bed then, but when I'm home, it seems to take all night.
they get into pajamas, brush teeth, watch a movie, and then I say goodnight, once I shut the door, they only come out to go to the bathroom. but the girls are so loud they play in there most of the night. So I'm really not good at this. They sleep late. My son falls asleep early because he has to be up for school. I lock myself in my room or become "unavailable" somewhere else in the house, but sometimes the girls come out looking for me.

i think all kids are master procrastinators. my 5 yr. is getting better, probably only takes 5 minutes, but i have to make sure she has her water cup. my 3 yr old usually calls up to 4 times for more milk or tuck in, and we lay down the law after a couple times, sometimes he'll get up and sit on couch until i tell him i'm watching something scary, then he'll go back to bed. probably takes 15-20 minutes.
of course, this is preceded by at least 1-3 book readings, teeth brushing help, and potty.

When my kids were small, it took at least an hour. Now that I have a 17, 13, and 9 yo I have lost the battle! They start thinking about going to bed at 10:00 p.m. Then they remember their homework. After that, they want a snack. Then the phone rings! When they finally go to bed, they sleep with the TV or radio on very loudly!

It takes far too long! I have three. The 11-month old goes down pretty easily (he can't escape the crib yet) but the other two (4 and 5 years old)... They are the masters of procrastination! When my daughter can't think of anything else, she will say "Mama, I need...hmmm...something..."
To answer your question, it usually takes about 15-20 minutes to get them into bed and then as long as an hour afterward until they fall asleep. Suggestion: Let them run around outside as much as possible after school. It seems to help!

This is what you need to follow:
1. Let your child elimate himself by all possible excuses. Water, milk and or snack.
2. you take child by hand and say its time for bed.
3. tuck child in bed and say good night.
4. child comes out for 1st time bring child back to bedroom and say its bedtime.
5. child comes out the 2nd time you take child by hand DO NOT say anything to the child place them in bed and leave.
6. Child comes out the 3rd or 4th time or so on repeat the 5th step. DO NOT respond.
I hope this works! It may take awhile for a couple weeks but by then the child will start to get the picture and bedtime will not be a hassle any longer.

Ok I have a 6 year old and a 12 year old. The 12 year old no problem usually. The 6 year old well he won't go unless I am laying with him!!! Ugh...I really need to get him out of this. My advice is stay firm and if they get up, pick them up and place them back in bed. It takes a lot of consistancy and patience!!! My sister actually reversed the door knob to get her kids to stay in bed!!!

It takes my 9 year old and 6 year old 15 minutes to get ready for bed that includes going to the toilet brushing their teeth and putting their pjs on. Then they hop in bed and go to sleep because they know if I have to go in their room to talk to them about not sleeping they will have to start going to bed earlier. they start getting ready for bed at 8.15pm and bedtime is 8.30pm
