It is insulting when people use the phrase as though Christianity and ethical behavior were synonymous. I don't think most Christians mean it as an insult; it's just a phrase they've heard all their lives. But it can be insulting, nonetheless.

More christian ambiguities. Christianity is based on what the society was like at the time. Back then the social structure was based on Pagan values and traditions, therefore much of christianitys celebrations (although the names are changed) and beliefs are pagan based. The bible has some very firmly set rules and these must be the christian values you are asking about.
Christianity is not the original nor even close to being one of the oldest religions around.

Christian values are special because they go beyond ethics and morality. Many people are ethical and moral, but not all of them are Christian!
Christians believe we should turn the other cheek, love our enemies, do good to people who hate us. Christians believe that Christ died to take away our sin and that if we believe and repent, we will spend eternity with God after this earthly life is finished. Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, what God has promised for those who love Him.
"We walk by faith, and not by sight;
no gracious words we hear
from him who spoke as none e'er spoke;
but we believe him near.
That, when our life of faith is done,
in realms of clearer light
we may behold you as you are,
with full and endless sight."
That's so much more than just ethics and morality.

Christian values essentially means that a Christian holds dear the same values that Christ held. It does not, and should not, mean that these values were created by Christ; they were spelled out by Him, but the originator of values was His Father. Sorry, Mudcat. I know you didn't want to hear that (I've read some of your other posts). That's just what I feel to be true.

Thats true, ethics and morality started with God, Adam and Eve, later it was spelled out in the Ten Commandments, then later it was detailed in the Mosaic Laws.
