The purpose of multiple gears on a bicycle is so that if you are going up a hill, you shift down, and decrease the amount of effort it takes to pedal, but also increase the the amount of pedal strokes you need, so you can sit and pedal comfortably without having to stand and really hammer the pedals. The inverse is true for larger gears, you want to use them while going downhill, because since you are already moving, you want less pedal strokes with more power behind them, so your speed will increase more rapidly, and you can pedal without compeletly just spinning out the pedals with no resistance. Hope that helps.

because the gears controll the speed of the bikeand the higher the gears the faster the bike will go. and since every one has different body shapes some are over weight and some are athletic the gears helps controll the amount of force required to move the bike. if you are strong you can bike up hill on high gears so the point of gears is to make life easier. so you dont have to stress out your legs trying to ride you bike up a little hill.

they provide diferent levels of resistance when you pedal. going up a hill, you want an easier gear, but when going down a hill you want a higher gear to go fast. most new bikes have 27 gears combinations total. this makes them more efficient. most riders dont need anymore than 21spd, but a dedicated cyclist will insist on using a 27spd

A person is usually most efficient within a certain cadence (RPM) range. Different gears allow you to go as fast as you need while maintaining your preferred cadence. More gears allow a smoother transition between gear ratios. That is, smaller jumps when shifting gears.

i hope you mean the kind you have to pedal. you have gears for power and speed. the lower gears are for getting going and climbing hills or steep grades and the higher gears are so you can go faster without having to pedal so fast. they work on the same principal on a motor driven cycle the lower gears are for getting going and you shift up as you gain speed.

That is b/c it is for if you want to go faster you will have those gears and will be able to go up hills a whole lot faster.

well basically bikes are for transportation right? and you travel on different terreins, so gears help you choose how you want to ride. switch between gears to ride smoother on wherever you are traveling on.
