When I logged on the EPA website and read an article on how to safe fuel, the author stated that letting the engine idle for a couple of minutes when you start it in the morning is just a waste of fuel. Instead the author proposed that we just continue driving and that the enine will warm itself up.

Actually... my mechanic who is also a friend, warned me NOT to 'warm' my car up in the morning. It does your engine more harm than good.
You are better off getting in the drivers seat, starting your cold car (brrr), and driving away.
Like your article said... the engine will warm itself up while you drive.

Well, the EPA is correct in saying that warming up an engine wastes fuel. But it also saves wear and tear on the engine. Getting in your car, firing it up and blasting off down the road before the oil has fully warmed up and circulated through the engine causes premature wear. I say screw the EPA, I bought the gas, and the car. I'll warm it up if I want to.

You need to let it warm up for a minute or so to let the oil circulate. Anything more is a waste of fuel, and time.

It depends on how old the car is. Cars older than 10 years usually need a warm up for about a minute.
