I remember being the most scared as a little kid when people would hide and jump out at us. A guy once lowered candy on a fishing line from the roof when we rang the doorbell, and one year there was a man on the roof in a costume who was hidden until we got to the door and then scared us, but the scariest moment of my whole trick-or-treating career was when Aguy chased us off with a fake (we swore up and down it was real) chainsaw right after we got our candy. We ran like crazy!

Well, back when my kids were little, and we would go trick or treating there was a man who used to dress up as a scarecrow and sit in a rocking chair with the bowl of candy on his lap and a sign saying to take a bag of candy. When the kids would put their hands in the bowl, he would grab their hand. When the kids screamed and tried to run, he would stand up. Perfection!! and worked everytime!!

Pretend to be a scarecrow, flannel shirt, jeans with hay coming out, big floppy hat. Sit on your front porch in a chair with the bowl of candy on your lap and a sign that says "sorry, not home, help yourself" and then when they grab for the candy YELL

Sit on a dimly lit front porch with a black cauldron filled with candy. Sit absolutley still (in a dark costume) and startle the Trick or Treaters as they near your door.
My husband did this last year...there was a lot of screaming!

Ok..
You need two people to do this.
-One person can lay on the lawn(face down), pretending to be dead, its better to have dirty ragady clothes to look like a zombie, and just stay there really still!
-when kids walk up to the door the other person just greets them all normally and gives them candy.
-The "dead" person chases them when they are done and yells "KEEP OFF MY PROPERTY!!"
then after giving them a scare go back and pretend to be "dead"
-repeat...

Wear a scary mask, but you might scare the little ones really bad. You don't want to ruin their Halloween.
