The new law hasn't changed the legal status of on-line poker in America but it has made it illegal for banks and credit card companies to facilitate transactions with off shore gambling sites. The reasons for this are suspect because they made exceptions for interstate lotteries, horse racing and fantasy sports. Senator Frist on of the new laws major sponsors has had large campaign contributions from Harrah's Entertainment one of the largest casino owners in America. So it's obvious not about protecting families or problem gambling or that gambling is "evil." It's about US based casinos being afraid of on-line competition and the difficulties in collecting taxes from companies outside of the US. If you play poker I suggest supporting the Poker Player's Alliance and playing at the on-line poker rooms that are fighting to keep on-line poker available to American citizens.

Some states have already outlawed it, but since the servers are overseas, all the states can do is go after players. If online poker does become outlawed by the federal government, here's what you'll see: 1. The next World Series of Poker champ will get arrested. 2. The IRS will step up enforcement of overseas cash transfers. 3. The Feds will force the banks to become the police for this. 4. On line gambling will continue through services like Neteller.

Here is a summary of what is going on with online gambling in the United States.

1) Prior to the passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, eleven states had laws on the books that specifically ban all forms of online gambling. These states are: IL, IN, LA, MI, NJ, NV, NY, OR, SD, WA, WI. Online gambling continues to be considered illegal in these states.

2) The Act did nothing to alter, curtail, or extend state laws regarding online gambling. Thus, it did not make online gambling illegal in all states.

3) The Act places restrictions on the financial transactions that occur in connection with online gambling; it restricts electronic fund transfers and the use of credit cards in connection with such wagering. This means that players can no longer make wagers, or collect winnings using electronic fund transfers, credit or debit cards, or some other online payment systems.

In response to the Act, online gambling sites have done one of three things with respect to US-based real-money players:
1) Continue to accept US-based real-money players from all states
2) Accept US-based real-money players from states other than the states in which online gambling is specifically outlawed (meaning no players from the states listed above)
3) Closed their site to all US-based real-money players

Here is a list of all gaming sites that continue to accept US-based real-money players from all states:

Here is a list of online poker sites that continue to accept US-based real-money players from all states:

Both of these lists are updated daily as gaming sites establish and publish their policy with respect to US-based real-money players.

Best of luck!
Robert
