I just came to know that as I didn't file tax return last year, I might face
serious trouble. My earlier question:

I didn't file because i was new here and I had no idea what to do and how to do. Also my income was extremely low. And I'll be punished for that? Wow.

All taxes were already taken out of my paychecks. Still it was my fault not to file taxreturn!!

Millions of illegal workers make huge money, thousands of them don't pay tax at all. They are still ok. I am perfectly legal resident, and I'll face trouble! Why?

God bless America!

Go ahead and file. You won't be in trouble for not filing earlier, even though you're late. If you owe money, you will pay interest. But you might get money back - on income at that level, you probably won't owe much.

If you're talking about taxes that should have been filed over three years ago, you wouldn't be able to collect any refund. If it's a shorter time than that, you'd still get your refund.

Good luck.

You very likely got a notice from the IRS because you did not file a return. Based on the information you previously provided your annual income was $10,800 you would have had a standard deduction of $5,000 and a personal exception of $3,200 giving you a taxable income of $2,600 for which the tax is $261 but you have a possible EIC credit of $71 leaving a tax of $190. During the year your employer very likely took out withholding. If you know that number subtract it from the $190 and that would be your tax liability. If the withholding is greater than the $190 you are due a refund of the difference. You should file your 2005 return and answer any inquire from the IRS as soon as possible to avoid any penalty. Your father should also file a return if he has not. The above number assumes that he did not file a return and take you as a dependent. Depending on what state you live in you will very likely get a notice from the state income tax people also. Without knowing the state I can not help with that.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse; and “yes” you it was your fault for not filing a tax return.

If the facts are true, and last year was the first year in which you had to file a tax return, my suggestion is to use a lower cost service (like H&R Block) to file a tax return for 2006, and a late return for 2005. Rather than vent frustration and indignation, you should fall on your sword and plead ignorance and penance. You say that you did not owe taxes, so there should not be any interest on taxes owed. If you can elicit the sympathy of the “tax man”, they may minimize the penalties associated with late filing (versus “throwing the book at you”.)

As you noted: deductions are being made from you paycheck already. Understand: assuming that you have no other income, the tax return is way of reconciling your records (the tax return) with the government’s records.

And regarding those illegals that you refer to: it is not that they are not in trouble – they just haven’t gotten caught.

Why do you think that those of us who live here and pay taxes are raising hell about ILLEGAL immigrants? We have to pay our taxes, you have to pay yours too and if anyone works here and draws a paycheck they should pay taxes like the rest of us. So, pay your taxes and yes God Bless America. Love it or leave it.If you love it and don't leave it then follow the rules.
