It is still a mystery why pigeons circle before they take off. But it is believed that they are getting there bearings on where they are and which way they need to be heading. It is also believed that they us the magnetic fields of the earth to help them find there way home. Some owners give their pigeons some magnetic iron supplements, as they believe that this will help them get back.

They fix on land features for the most part, but they evidently have soem degreeo radar or navagation scientiost have not figured out yet.
You can completely cover a pigeon and move it several hundred
miles away and still they can find their way home. Inn this case following land marks would not worrk and the bird would have oto have inherited abilities to navigate the skys.
Pigeons have even been taken in the middle of the night and returned days or weeks later due to the distance away from their starting point.they were left .
