Since 1971 in can's and Bottles. And 1919 when Roy Allen first to partner with Frank Wright thus A&W was born 1922. But you couldn't buy A&W Root beer for the home until 1971, prior to that it was only on tap. So how long has A&W root beer been avaliable to buy 1922 on tap and 1971 in cans or bottles for the home.

From their website:
One hot day in June of 1919 in Lodi, California an entrepreneur named Roy Allen mixed up a batch of creamy root beer and sold the first frosty mug of this delightful beverage for one nickel. Now, more than seventy years later, A&W Root Beer® is the world's number one selling root beer and is still mixed fresh daily and sold at hundreds of A&W® restaurants.

A&W was invented by Alice & Willard Marriott, of the hotel fame. Seems like that was in the 50's, if I remember my history correctly. But if you Google Willard Marriott, any biography should mention he and his wife's A&W Root Beer stores.
