I ask someone who has experience, research on my own about the task/topic, I watch others if I can, observe how they handle/perform it, I ask on yahoo about people who know a thing or too about it, I read about it, thru books, articles, volunteer for internships, sit it on workshops... I try my best to be more informed.. and utilize any and every available opportunity!
If it's something like brain surgery.. well I toss my hands in the air, and admit my limitations. I can't be a know it all, and don't want to be... but if it's something I feel I can do,,then I learn.
Great example given to me thru the Do it yourself category here.. I've had some great responses to a house project, and got some quality advice. At least I'll look like I know what I'm talking about when I do tackle the project. :o)

Most things come with instructions. When I can figure something out I usually read the instructions.
