About four weeks ago a stray young male adult cat showed up at our home. We have no female cats, so he isn't there for that reason. After two weeks we started feeding him cause we felt bad. I have other pets and kids. I have checked with the neighbors but they say he is not their cat. How long do i need to wait for someone to get him or for him to go home before I can have him neutered and get his shots.

4 weeks is a long enough time to consider him abandoned. He may have had a former owner if he was still in good shape, albeit a bit skinny.
Check w the animal shelter/humane society if he matches any of the lost kitty reports. You didn't say if he had any tags, collar marks, or if he has already been fixed. I believe checking the lost reports at the shelters fulfills your duty to make the effort of finding his previous owners.
I'm hoping you will make him an inside cat to keep him safer. If he's not been neutered, do so! It will save both of you alot of potential grief in the long run.

Sounds like you have been adopted! Congrats!!

Bless you! That is how I got my 2 baby kitty's! Strays are the best pets. They are so appreciative because you saved them from a fate worse than death. They will be loyal and faithful to you for eternity.

You have done EVERYTHING needed to find the cats owner.

Obviously there was no owner if the poor boy was wandering without a collar even a flea collar and has not been fixed either.

He is your kitty now.

Have a great life with your new furry kid. Spoil the boy rotten!

If only there were more responsible people like you in the world.

Not only do you want to keep him you are going to neuter and vaccinate him.

Good Luck

~Ciao~

Call your local shelter to see if a lost report for a describson of the cat you have has been made. The shelter can also check for a microchip. After 2 wks. and no one has done that then I would go ahead and take responsibility for him. People everyday move out of the neighborhoods and leave their pets behind, which may be the case with this cat.

Sounds like he has been abandoned. I would take him right to the vet and have him checked out and bring him in to your home if you want him. With the cold weather coming he shouldn't have to live outside in the elements. Neutered male cats are just great! Usually the sweetest cat you can have.

You can claim him now. If you see a sign or ad at some point about him, then you can, of course, contact them. But, this cat needs a home and vet care right now. Even if your home is his for only a few weeks, you are doing the right thing. Chances are, if he has been there for 2 weeks, he is yours forever.

Take him to your vet or animal shelter and make sure he doesn't have one of the tracking chips in his neck. If he does you can't claim him as yours and I'm sure you'll return him to a very happy and relieved family. Male cats tend to roam far from their homes so its not necissarily true that he'd live close to you.

I saw an episode on one of the Animal Cop shows on Animal Planet where they returned a cat to its original owners almost 8 years later and he was 4 or 5 states away from his original home. They were able to find his owners because of the chip in his neck.

I'd say keep him. I'd still check for Missing cat signs... you never know. And if the cas was the other way around... I think you'd like your cat back. So, stay with him and keep an eye of the ads.

Congrats to ya, for being nice to the animals. Not very common.

If you have checked the want ads and no one appears to be looking for himI would say you are within your rights to give him a new home. Good on ya'. A lot of people don't care and it warms my heart that you are willing to adopt him. I've done the same and ended up with some great , dedicated pets who filled our hearts and home with a lot of love. Go for it...

That is how Nala found us. She must have been under 8 weeks old. I got her out of the hood of the car on a cold night. Nobody claimed her. I spayed her, and adopted her. The German Shepherd adores her! They're friends, share a food bowl, are always playing, and she's not a little orphan anymore.

So, keep him!
