My rabbit has a tumor, but the vet said it's not cancerous. I thought all tumors turn into cancer. Can someone explain a little?

To my knowledge, there are two types of tumour;

Benign-: which means it's harmless and not cancerous.
Malignant:- Which means cancerous and harmful.

It sounds like your rabbit has a harmless, benign tumour.

Hope this helps a little

Hi Coyote. Most tumors never become cancers. The process of carcinogenesis is thought to involve three stages: Initiation, Promotion and Progression. A tumor develops after Initiation (which creates a 'rogue' cell) and during the Promotion stage (this may be a 15-25 year process). Tumors in the Promotion stage are not cancers (that is they are benign). A tumor only becomes cancerous (and therefore a cancer) if it 'progresses' to the Progression stage. Most tumors never get this far.

Hope this helps you. Best wishes.

A tumor is an abnormal growth of tissue resulting from uncontrolled, progressive multiplication of cells and serving no physiological function; a neoplasm. Where it becomes cancerous is when it Any of various malignant neoplasms characterized by the proliferation of anaplastic cells that tend to invade surrounding tissue and metastasize to new body sites. In other words when it spreads to other parts of the body.
