Actually, Histoplasmosis is a type of fungus. The organism is frequently found in areas where there is a lot of bird feces (they can be carriers) - like barns, or old buildings. It is considered to be all over the Ohio River Valley - so people in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, etc. are frequently exposed.
Many people who have been exposed never develop any infection. In fact, on random chest x-rays, some people show evidence of previous infection with Histo, and they never knew it. However, some people do get a lung infection, which frequently can present as a fungal ball on chest X-ray, or can look like a regular pneumonia.
Histoplasmosis can infect any organ - liver, spleen, the eye, etc. It is treatable with anti-fungal agents. As with all infections, people who are immunosuppressed are particularly at risk for a dangerous infection.
