Hanfastings are basically temporary marriages (lasting only so long as the couple feels that they are in love and trust one another), and because marriage involves a contract that includes sharing property and parenting responsibilities, it is in the province's interest to insure these contractual elements are carried out.
If you undergo a hanfasting without trying to register it with the province, I cannot believe that there would be a problem. The problem would occur when one of the spouses complained and sought state protection for property and child support for the children.
My guess, even though I'm American, is that you can have a fully legal hanfasting by registering it as a marriage to the province, but you therefore would have to go through a legal divorce in order to dissolve it. In truth, all marriages are hanfastings now days, since half of the marriages end in divorce, anyway.

Wait, what?
In the USA, it's LEGAL... it's just not recognized like, say, a church marriage would be.
I'm so confused. Here I was, ready to head to Canada...
... and you can't perform handfastings!
Note to self: Free Health Care's not worth it.
