I'm a girl, I'm 16 and I lead a quite happy life - I have enough friends, I do well at school, I get on with my parents ect. And sometimes I am happy; as I feel I should be. But sometimes I feel really very unhappy, quite often for no reason it can last for ages and then I feel happy again. I cant stand people knowing that I feel unhappy. When I get unhappy I sometimes (and god, I know this is stupid, I can't belive I do it) cut myself. Other times I become obsessed with my friends/family dying (again I know - stupid). Other times I think about killing myself. Now I know I'm a teenager and everyone goes though stuff like this - and if this is just normal teenage stuff that is good, I can live like this and hopefully I will grow out of it. I just dont want to end up like I did I few years ago when I was very unhappy indeed and ended up trying to kill myself (really unsucsessfully) or like my dad who has manic depression. I think I am pretty normal I'd just like to be happier.

I think a great part of your problem is right in your request - Make me happier!

True happiness only comes from within, not even from friends or family or activities you like.

It comes from knowing exactly who you are, what you can do in this life and what your purpose in this life is.

I highly recommend 2 books, 1 you may have heard of and 1 you have not heard of; The Purpose Driven Life by Christian pastor Rick Warren, and Achieving Peace of Heart by priest Fr. Narciso Irala.

They have helped me with my emotional problems and they can do the same for you if you truly take their advice to heart and practice it every day.

Depression does have a genetic aspect to it, and since your dad has it, you may very well have it too, so go to your doctor and get blood tests to see if your problem is biologically based.

If your blood tests are OK, then I recommend seeing a psychologist and just talking away some of your fears and suicidal thoughts.

May God make you better.

Most of that is normal teenage stuff. Don't beat yourself up about being human.

The cutting isn't, the suicidal thoughts aren't, and mental disorders tend to run in families. Talk to your family about your problems, and seek professional help. Try your school, or get a referral from your family doctor.

Do you drugs or drink? At all? Some of that could be exaggerating your feelings.

This is caused by chemical imbalances that everyone goes through from time to time. They are especially hard to control at your age, because they are very strong then and you haven't learned to cope with them yet. Lack of experience.
You may also be genetically loaded down from your dad and should look for medical help to control that. And wanting to be happier is definitely a worthwhile goal. Don't give up on yourself and stop hurting yourself. Things will get better (if you give it a chance!!!)

For the most part, you are a normal teen. Rejoice in that!

But the cutting is not normal. Nor is attempted suicide. Have you tried talking with your parents or a guidance councellor about this? If not, you should.

Good luck, and live a good life, Sweetheart.

Everyone goes through ups and downs, but cutting yourself is not normal.

Please go to counselling.
