you could get a newer american car with less miles for the same price of an older honda with a lot more miles...why is that so?

I am a honda owner and employee. The main reason is they just build a better product. Also overproduction kills resale value thats why your domestic cars are always advertising crazy discounts and leftover sales! We also don't do fleet sales to rental car companies! If you consider a domestic car be prepared to drive it into the ground! (Domestics have the worst trade in value)

There's no doubt that Harley holds it's value better, but let me propose another point. If you plan to keep the bike for a very long time, you may have a real problem finding parts for any Honda over 10 yrs old. Honda and the other Japanese bikes tend to change things on a regular basis, and quit making the older parts. You can still buy almost any part for a 50 yr old Harley! Try doing that for a 1965 Honda!

American Cars are built to fail after 4 years or 75,000 miles. Japanese cars are built to last as long as they haven't turned to rust. That is why you routinely see Hondas with 150-200,000 miles on them still in use as a daily driver.

free market...the consumer will pay "market value" for an item.

It so happens that the Japanese car maker Honda creates a product that is more valuable to the American consumer than the American car makers can match.

Go drive 100k mi Hondas (and Toyotas) at used car lots.

Then do that with domestics.

You will discover the answer quickly.
