Deism is a religious philosophy and movement that became prominent in England, France, and the United States in the 17th and 18th centuries. Deists typically reject supernatural events (prophecy, miracles) and divine revelation prominent in organized religion, along with holy books and revealed religions that assert the existence of such things. Instead, deists hold that correct religious beliefs must be founded on human reason and observed features of the natural world, and that these sources reveal the existence of one God or supreme being.

Many of the founding fathers of America were Deists.......Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin-to name a few.

Thomas Jefferson wrote a great piece on how he looked at people and the world around him. Wish I could find it.

So when people say this was meant to be a Christian nation, they are wrong. It was to be free for any and all religions.

A deist believes that God created this world and went on to other projects. He is not an ever present deity who solves man's problems, but expects them to handle things by themselves.

i think deism is the belief that god made the world and then let it run its course, never directly interfering with people's lives. deists also emphasize nature and reason over the normal beliefs that god is all powerful and all knowing.
