I'm looking for a lap dog to pamper and spoil. I would like one that is loving and happy to sit on my lap and not always running around. I don't mind brushing or giving special attetnion the dog needs; I have time. I want it to be happy to go in the car with me and happy to stay at home. I would like it to be small enought to go in a purse. And most important not too hard to house break. Any suggestions????

When I mentioned to go in a purse.... I just was referring to how small I would prefer the dog to be. I'm really about a dog being a loyal friend and not an accessary!!

I would suggest a Pom over a Chihuahua. Although a Pom requires a lot of brushing it is a fast learner and will be loyal to you even with it's own life. They also can be a little barky but with training you can teach them to hush on command. But they will always bark at the door to let you know someone is there. They always are excited to see you when you come home. They will be the first to greet you at the door when you come home, try to cheer you up when your sad, try to make you laugh when your mad, and they try to make you feel better with all the kisses they can give you (at least my four Poms do). Chihuahua's are great also but unless they socialized with other people they can be nippy. They're both great dogs when trained properly.

You must train a dog to do what YOU want it to do. However certain breeds have better temperament for certain activities than others. I have never owned a Chihuahua. so I can't say anything about that with any authority, but a Pom is a delightful, demanding, smart, loving, stubborn, loyal friend. My baby {male} was "accident prone" because he kept running out the door whenever it opened , and returning if and when he felt like it! He was hit by a car twice, had his back broken{surgery-metal plate inserted in his back},a heart "condition", and was bad as, well you know. If you want a do what you want it to do dog, don't get a Pomeranian!!! Try a Yorkie. Now that's a cutie.

Well you kinda want things that are common to both those types of dogs. The calmer less running around fitting in the purse kinda dog is the chihuahua. I am not a fan but I will be even handed here. If you want an easier dog to train I would go with the pomie they can learn cool tricks but they are excessivly hyper at times. The chi will be calmer but they have some inherent health problems. So really its all about what kind of "accessorie" dog you want. If you just want a posh fashion statment get a stuffed dog that looks real and stick that in your purse.Personally I would pick the pomie but they are a little more sporty I think you want the chi

I would recomend a Papillon. Mine is 5.5lbs and very intelligent and has a lovely personality. They look fancy but actually take very little grooming, just brush them very other day or so to make sure the fur doesn't mat up. You can wash them in the kitchen sink and blow dry them yourselves, they do not need any special trimming or grooming. Our Pap goes everywhere with us and loves people and other animals. She DOES like to play, but doesn't need a lot of exercise. Throwing her mini tennisball for 15 minutes once a day takes care of that. She also has had no trouble going for 2 or 3 mile hikes when we take her camping. If you want a dog that really just lives for its human, seriously look into this breed. They are the perfect companion dog... they love their people, they are easy to care for, they are small enough to take everywhere and mine has always been very healthy.

I wouldn't suggest either, as the ones I have come across are seriously overbred and hyper (that equals a not-very-good lap dog). Try looking at other toy breeds. Bichons, Cavaliers, Poodles, Phalenes or Papillons. I have a 2 year old Papillon and she is smart as a whip. I really wanted a Pom before I got her but the ones that I found were incouragable. And from my experience with Chihuahuas, they're very loyal--but only to who's lap they're sitting on at the moment.
It took me 3 months and a breeder in Oklahoma before I found my Papillon, but the wait was worth it. She's only 6 pounds, was easy to train, never messes in the house, and loves to be loved.
Here's a pic of one if you're interested: http://www.pets.ca/breedprofiles/a/papillon/p1.jpg

get a chihuahua since you don't mind brushing the dog think about getting a longhaired one. think about getting two chihuahua's so the chihuahua won't have to stay at home alone while you are gone somewhere small dogs have a tendency to panic if left alone for to long. get a dog from a very good breeder.

Get a female pomeranian because they will easily ajust to their surroundings like in a car or just on your lap for that matter.

If you really want a suggestion... neither. Chihuahua have a bad reputation on heath problems. Pomeranian never shut up!! Might i suggest a Papillion? They're a very tough breed. They can be used to heard cattle. They're very small and extremely smart!
A perfect match if i do say so myself!
