Abreva works well, but a little pricey. heres some info on the medicine:
ABREVA contains 10% Docosanol, a unique patented active ingredient that helps protect against the infection. It changes the cell membrane that surrounds healthy skin cells. This modified cell membrane then acts as a barrier to the cold sore virus, making it harder for the virus to get into the cell.
Abreva speeds the healing of cold sores and fever blisters on the face or lips. It also relieves the accompanying symptoms, including tingling, pain, burning, and itching. Abreva cannot, however, prevent cold sores or fever blisters from appearing.
Abreva should be used at the first sign of a cold sore or fever blister, which is usually felt as a tingling sensation. Early treatment ensures the best results.

Abreva works well. Also, to speed up healing, if you see any fluid-filled blisters, take a needle and carefully puncture it to let the fluid out. This way it'll dry out and begin healing sooner. For any pain or discomfort, use Blistex. The label said it's only to get rid of pain or discomfort associated with coldsores, but i found that shortened healing time for me. It's only about 2 bucks too.

That Abreva stuff is really good...Ain't cheap, But that what I use when I get them. It won't be gone in a couple of days. But it'll be 90% gone in about a week. Then also get some Campho-Phenque. To alleviate the itching.

A cold sore has to go through it's evolutionary course, about seven days to ten. The most your going to accomplish is making it less sore.
Keep it moist with lip balm and don't pick.
