Usually 6-8 weeks before the actual wedding day.
Sometimes before sending out the invites, Save the date cards are sent to give people a 'heads-up'.

Invitations should be sent out 6-8 weeks prior to the wedding date.
If it is around the holidays or you are having a destination wedding then you should send 'Save the Date' cards 6 -9 months before the wedding. Your guests need plenty of notice in those instances so that they may get time off work, make travel arrangements, save up money, etc.

Normally invitations are sent out about 2 months before the wedding. That way it gives people enough time to reply and not forget. If you send them out too early people may forget. Don't worry about the hall as you usually don't have to give an exact count of people untill about one month before the wedding.

In my experience, Invitations should be sent out 6-8 weeks in advance. If it is around the holidays or a destination wedding, then it should be 10-12 weeks. You can also choose to send Save the Date cards (which can be sent out 4 months before the wedding), so your guests can put it on their calendar and start preparing it (i.e. getting time off work, making travel arrangements, etc.).

I sent mine out about 2 months before our wedding. I think that's pretty standard.
If it's a location wedding you will probably want to give more time, like 3-4 months, since people will have to make travel arrangements.

Depends on if the wedding is local, or how many people have to travel. I am going to send save the date cards 6 months to all my out of town relatives. I will send actual invites 6 to 8 weeks in advance.

Some people sent invitations out 6 months before, just so they can get the reply at least 3 months prior. The hall would be booked before sending invitations, but exact number of guests can be counted by the reply cards.

8-10 weeks before and if you don't have an rsvp by three weeks , then you call to enquire if they are ccoming and how many. It's especially important if the wedding is around traditional holidays like Thanksgiving , Christmas, Easter, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July to get your invitations out early as people may make other plans and have to refuse.

6-8 weeks is proper etiquette. As others have said, "save the date" cards can be sent ahead of time. Also, you can do a mailing after the invites go out with suggested dress, event directions, itinerary, etc.
