I took my little boy to get his eyes checked today and was really upset, so the optician took a picture of one of my eyes to reassure him. He commented that I am shortsighted (something about being -3), but I've never noticed any problems! Is this very slight, or do I really need to get checked out?

you have nothing to lose by having your eyes tested, the fact that the optician made a comment it would be the sensible thing to do. you were not the patient to-day so he was not going to be more explicit, I think you should ,its very simple and well worthwhile, you may be over using one eye to compensate for the other.

Have an eye test done just to make sure..your optician should be able to tell you whether or not you need them. Even if there is a problem you might have just grown used to it, so there could still be a problem.

I'm long sighted, and got my eyes checked only last year when the man on the other end of the phone was howling with laughter when I couldn't read the serial number on the back of my computer!
It cant hurt to get them checked. You wont notice problems as it is a slow process of your eyesight going.

Get it checked out. It might be that you are managing to compensate for your shortsightedness (i am objectively much more astigmatic than I am subjectively - i.e. when my optician measures it, it's really bad, when he asks me what i can see, it's not so bad), or that you just haven't realised that your sight is poor, because it's come on slowly.

I always used to think that subtitles and teletext were really rubbish and out of focus - until i got my glasses and realised it was actually my eyes...

-3 definitely needs glasses. However, this is only in ONE eye? So your other eye has regular eyesight? You haven't noticed anything because your good eye is dominant. You should have a thorough eye exam for yourself. Sometimes the dominant eye becomes affected by the good eye, and you'll need glasses later anyhow.

-3 is quite short sighted! I dont know how you could have not noticed.
My eyes are -5 and Im as blind as a bat!
You really should get it checked out as you would not be safe for driving and you are probably straining your eyes.

Do you have insurance that covers eye exams? there is no harm in going if it has been a while. Mayeb you have got so used to your vision that you don't notice anything bad. But if you had a pair of prescribed glasses on you may realize that your vision was impaired after all

I started out like that, but ended up wearing glasses to read. Get it checked out before you ruin your eyes.
