The point is If in English you have to say "Snoopy is a dog" etc.

Then wouldn't you say the proper English sentence of the translation "The Word is god" is

"The Word was a god"

You can't say "the president" because the word "the" is not in the word for word translation.

Snoopy is a dog.

The Volkswagon is a car.

The cat is an animal. (Whenever a vowel or vowel sound comes after "a", you turn it into "an".)

Sam is a president (but "Sam is the president" might be better.)

Sam is with Fred. Fred is the president. Sam is also the president. (I used "also" because "also" shows there is more than one president in the group.)

The word was with God. The word was god. (If you mean it is God's word, then you can say, "The word was God's.")

Edit: No, it wouldn't be proper to change the sentence to "The word was a god" because words cannot be a deity, they're not concrete enough. You could say, "The dog was a god," though.
The reason it is "The word is god" is you're saying the word is on the same *level* as something holy. It cannot, however, actually be a god.
