What is the proper english sentence for these word for word translations?

The original language has the definite article "the" but does not contain the indifinite article "a" or "an".

Snoopy is dog.

The Volkswagen is car.

The cat is animal.

Sam is president

Sam is with Fred. Fred is the President. Sam is president.

The Word was with God. The word was god.

The point is If in English you have to say "Snoopy is a dog" etc.

Then wouldn't you say the proper English sentence of the translation "The Word is god" is

"The Word was a god"

You can't say "the president" because the word "the" is not in the word for word translation.

"Word" is capitalized so is a title

The word was with God. The word was god. (If you mean it is God's word, then you can say, "The word was God's.")

Edit: No, it wouldn't be proper to change the sentence to "The word was a god" because words cannot be a deity, they're not concrete enough. You could say, "The dog was a god," though.
The reason it is "The word is god" is you're saying the word is on the same *level* as something holy. It cannot, however, actually be a god.
