I see people who claim to talk to god.

That god talks back to them.

They claim to know what god wants because the one cult they chose to follow (out of over 200 on earth) has that god's word all scribbled down for everyone to read (and for none of the followers to agree upon, by the way).

They pretend that mumbling into their hands somehow transmits their messages and wants to their god, and that he's sitting "up there" somewhere taking notes...answering some mumblings, ignoring other mumblings. I saw a rodeo once, and when the rider dismounted, he thanked his god for a safe bull-ride. Why did he pretend that some god was doing that? Why does anyone? Is it a low self-esteem? An over-inflated ego making one think they know and talk with a god?

I know there is no logic or reasoning involved here. Does anyone have any idea why people pretend this way, or why they have these delusions?

Wow. thanks to many of you for your intelligent, thought out answers. NO thanks to several of you who didn't answer, but just used this as an opportnity to preach mindlessness and cult stuff. Several of you never pass up an opportunity to proselytize.

I think it is all a sense of belonging for them. Kind of funny too. Plus, if they put the responsibility for all things on someone else's shoulders then they think they don't have to take full responsibility for anything. Also, I think you are about to get pounded by the bible-thumpers...so prepare yourself.....hahahah

Because they can profit from it, using all the tradition, threats, appeals to emotion, and the full weight of the politics of their religion to get what they want. This is how religion works. It is the norm, not the exception.

Religious adherents are divided into two essential categories: true believers, and those who prey on them. The true believers use the religion as an escape from consequence, either resulting from circumstances (believe that your dead loved ones are in heaven rather than simply in the ground) or their own actions (pray for forgiveness). True believers don't climb the ladder very far. The others know they're part of a hustle, and will say anything, do anything, and pretend to be anybody to get to the top.

There may not be anything I can say to you or anyone else to make you see God is real. Pretending there is a God is not being true to God. i dont know of anyone who pretends to know God. you seem confused or lost and looking for some answers and perhaps you do really beleive in god but do not know how to follow him or get personal with him. I will pray for you--

God Bless you andmay you find God so that you can let go of this feeling and have peace "with" God.

people want so desperatly bad to have a proof or a real relationship with a god, (that the rest of the world believes does not exist) that it warps their mind into thinking they are communicating with god. much like how those headaches work, u give a person a sugar pill and their headdache goes away (obviously the sugar didnt fix the problem) it was all in their heads.

I think they have weird delusians because they're so caught up inthe idea that some god could talk to them that they get weird 'daydreams' about god talking to them. They probably made this stuff up because they need some higher power to believe in so they can survive. But, th only reason they need this is because they've gotten so used to the idea of god they can't help themselves.

Why do you say that you see people who claim to talk to God. Have you ever tried to talk to God. God does talk back. But not as clearly as we would sometimes like. But thats just because God wants us to listen and want to know him. If you really truly try to find out what these people are talking about than maybe you'll come to actually know. When you say that they pretend to mumble into their hands "messages that transmit to God" thats called prayer. Prayer is just conversation with God. It's actually quite simple. God wants to listen to you and he wants you to listen to him. And when you say that he "ignores" some of their mumbles and doesn't others, thats His decision. He knows what is best for us because he created us. He doesnt ignore some, he chooses not to answer them as we might have asked. But he does answer them but maybe the way that he knows is best. It might be exactly what we were hoping now to happen, but if we really want to be in God's will then we'll come to the realization that it is the right decision. We dont know the entire picture, but He does.

Oh and I highly doubt that the reason that people talk to God is because they have low self-esteem. People who are strong in their faith definately do not have a low self-esteem. They have to be strong and know who they are because they are persecuted in todays world. Today people look down upon Christians. To be a true Christian and truly believe, people definately need to be strong people. They'll probably be some of the strongest people you'll ever know.

How about this. I challenge you to really look deep into the Christian faith. Personally I'm a Catholic and if you really try to tear apart the Catholic faith you might be suprised at what you find.

Oh and the reason you see that people arent all agreed on one exact doctrine of the Christian faith is because is of sin. Adam and Eve sinned at the beginning of time. And because of sin the faith is a little split. But God has given us free will and choice and it is something that he has given us to resolve. But it will take time, but God has given us a trial to overcome.

So just research and really dig deep and then you'll really find your answers.

you know I've been asking myself that same question for years. you would think that if they believe putting a recipe together makes food, they would at least consider other concrete examples of reality. not to say that they have to stop believing, but just consider. I think only a limited mind would sit blindly and pulled by their noses into any situation. it's really funny that people will tell a used car salesman they are charging them too much money for a car, but refuse to question religion, which is a bigger part of their like. beats me.

Oh yes, your absolutely right. I base my ENTIRE life on pretend. I have such low self-esteem that i have to go to God so i can have eternal life with Him. I "mumble" into my hands, hoping that God is listening, because we all know He ignores some people right? I mean, why wouldn't He give us everything we want? It cant be because He is all-knowing and all-powerful can it? Why do I thank God for giving me life everyday, for giving me everything i own, like food and shelter? Geez...He's only a figment of my imagination right?

God is in your heart and yes I talk to him and he talks to me. He has a still quiet voice. I had to reach the bottom of the barrel before I realized he was the barrel that was holding me up. If you believe in God no explanation is necessary, and if you don't believe no explanation is possible. I'll be praying that you find him as I have.

It is delusional to think that the complexity and beauty of creation is the result of pure, blind chance...that out of chaos and/or nothingness both the universe and humankind came into existence without intellect and purpose.

It makes more sense to me that creation is the work of a Creator, and that the laws of nature come from a Lawgiver---and are not the result of randomness. Think about it!
