It probably involved animism (spirit in natural things) and polytheism (multiple Gods.) It was an attempt to explain and influence the natural world.

the first religions technically were oral religions, mainly from Africa. Most likely some sort of animism. There has been religion ever since people started having abstract thoughts...
people are so closed minded, written religions even date back to as far as 5,000 years ago (which definitely eliminates Jews/Christians/Muslims and Buddhists) People were alive before A.C.E., believe it or not! (This is directed to some comments before me)
The oldest religion that is still in the top 5 most popular religions is Hinduism.
the oldest proof of religion is from Africa and it's 230,000 years old! the berekhat Ram Figurine.
hope this helps.

The very first religion was the Worship of Jehovah God even long before the creationan by the angels in Heaven and then by Adam and Eve and has exhisted since the beginning of time even the Jews worshipped him as did Jesus also in John 20 :17 centuries later came other religions 4,000 years after adam Jesus came and started the Christian Religion and 3-400 years after that other religions got their start hope that answers your questions I dealt only with "Christian " religions or more specifically monotheistic thos e who claim to worship one God Gorbalizer

some form of nature worship. As the human mind increased in complexity, the first thing they would have been aware of are hte "amazing" things going on in the natural world: the glowing ball in the sky that goes away *and then comes back*! Wow! The silver orb of the night that shrinks, disappears, and grows again. How intriguing. The ever-repeating circle of the seasons--awe inspiring..... And so on. There was no science, so these things seemed inexplicable, miraculous, divine, full of deeper meaning. Having no other explanation, we inveted religion to explain them, to give ourselves a sense of familiarity and control.

Islam, Christianity and Judaism. It is impossible to separate the 3 from their origin. They all started at the same time, with the belief in the same one God. It was through the chain of prophets and over history that they diversified. Regardless of what a religion is called, in theory the first "true religion" was established when the first human realized that there was a divine force greater than him/her.

Astrotheology is the earliest recorded religion. If other forms of religion preceded it, we have no record of that.
It seems reasonable that it would be the first recorded religion, since both astrotheology and writing are tools invented to deal with agriculture (as is the state). Astrotheology was more accurate than lunar cycles for keeping track of the seasons before calendars were invented.

Judaism is actually a later development--ancient Israelite religion is different from judaism.
"primitive" religions, such as aboriginal beliefs or those practiced in African traditional religion, often containing intercessory ancestor relationships, seem to be the oldest.

I believe the same gospel I believe in now was taught to Adam and Eve. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I know the "church" was not organized then, but I believe the same principles and doctrine were taught to them as I am taught now.
Why? Because I know it is true and I know that it is the only complete gospel the Lord has ever had on the earth.

I believe the first religion is atheism. Why do I believe it. It is because people had to develope their belief system. Its a fact that people in their origins did not believe in anything but did believed in survival.People cant just be born and bam theres my religion without someone explaining it to you!

The first religion was obviously Judaism. God created the world, and so the first humans were Jews who believed in God.
