They are meant to be a place to contemplate life and our place in it. That is why the garden is often times a microcosym of a landscape (meaning a small version) there is specific arangements for the placing of rocks, as well as specific grouping numbers. Inside the rocks are spirits called kommies (seriously) and if set in an unorganized way they are irritated and can cause unrest and bad luck, but organized correctly they will be peace and good luck

Each element of the garden has significance, the rocks, trees, water, plants and even gravel. I don't know what they are though.
