You can certainly choose your own major in college so the fact that someone else failed to plan should not stop you.
You obviously are not aware that after you have worked for a few years you will want to be promoted, and at some point, the promotions will require a college degree. That's right, one of those worthless, History of Civilization majors will get that promotion ahead of you.
A college degree is likely to help when you are beginning your career, but lack of one will certainly put a brake on how far you can go later on.

In our pointless, shallow, unfair society, there are three choices.
1. Work your as-s off in university, following the path of the honest and intelligent person, and hope that you achieve success doing what you like to do.
2. Being the spoilt daughter of a rich corporate bastard, inheriting everything from daddy, getting a managerial position that you don't deserve and blowing away your money on corvettes while the other half of the world population starves.
3. Refuse the opportunity of becoming a real person, by not going to university, and settle for a mediocre job, working your as-s off for a miserable income, mixing concrete or bagging groceries, effectively giving up any possibility of doing something worthy for mankind and dying as a mediocre.
The fourth choice is being incredibly lucky by winning the lottery or marrying a rich bastard. But it ain't gonna happen.
My suggestion, obviously, is that you go to university. To refuse the opportunity of becoming "somebody", an opportunity that many people never have in their entire lives, is terribly retarded.
