if you can't find any of his personal papers like tax returns or paycheck stubs go to your local social security office. If you have a good reason for needing it they will give it to you after you fill out some forms

you would have to write to the social security center and send them a copy of the death certificate with the raised seal. You would also have to tell them why you want the number.
