I listen to sports on AM but its maddening at times with the interference signals and not so clear reception.

AM can be improved dramatically with an antenna. Even a simple wire antenna can work wonders.

I listen to a news radio station in my hometown......and I'm 1100 miles away!

AM radio travels farther at night. Try listening to AM radio at night and it'll sound better than FM.

AM signals have a much greater range than FM.

if you think am reception is bad try using shortwave.
i live in Indianapolis and can get stations from Detroit Chicago and Cincinnati

Extra frequency spectrum and greater range from transmitter.
