Maybe you should kneel down to the dog when a car is approaching and comfort it until the car has passed. If your dog can be calm while a car passes without you having to comfort it, give it a treat and praise.

a dog can sense when an owner is feeling tense, u probably tense up when u see the car coming because u know the dog will act up.next time u see a car coming think of something else besides the dog freaking out hold the leash firmly and don't let the dog jump around u can distract him by having him focus on something other than the car to do this sit him down and when he gets up to freak out nudge the dog between the rib cage and the hind leg with your foot this takes him mind off the car and now u can say "no" but say it in a calm assertive voice u can't be stressed or he'll sense it u have to be calm think about ice cream or something u enjoy the more u do it the less of a task it will be and he'll give up on cars

It has nothing to do with them being from the pound. My family has had several pound dogs and they all love the car. Maybe it is how you are presenting the car to them. If you push them and force them in then they wont want to go. Also the vet isn't a very pleasant place for dogs. If you only put her in the car to take her to the vet then you are telling her that car = vet. Would you want to go in a car if every time you did you were dragged to the doctor to be poked and prodded? Also you don't adopt dogs from breeders, you buy them. Back yard bred dogs have problems like this too although they are from "breeders".

Here is a little dog pyschology
If the dog is frightened of noisy cars that pass you buy while you are out on a walk and if you hear the car approaching and it is noisy stop where you are standing and bend down to your pet and cover his/her ears and tell the dog "it's ok over and over a few times make sure you have full control on the leash and keep your dog in place do the same if the dog is scared of quiet cars passing by. another thing you can try is to move away from the curve of the street hold the dog cover the dogs ears and repeatly tell him/her hey it's ok

First you have to train your dog to respect you as his pack leader. He will then trust that you will not allow him to be hurt. Do not let your dog walk in front of you. Make him wait in a sit while you walk out the door in front of him. This will show him that you are in charge. Get a choke collar and hold the leash close to you with the collar up under his chin and just behind his ears. Speak to him with authority but do not yell at him. When a car passes by, tug on the leash just a bit if he trys to pull away. Praise him with the tone of your voice when he behaves properly. Walk him frequently and always make him walk a half step behind you. If he believes you are in charge and will not allow the "big scary car" to hurt him... he will calm down. Be consistant!!

Some dogs go crazy over the sound of a car engine, or just the fact that a huge machine is being catapulted their way. My dog used to do the same thing. I would think he's just a timid dog when it comes to large, loud foreign objects. I would be thankful that he's scared and not chasing them instead.

When the car goes by, just stand still and toss him a treat. Speak calmly to him, and keep giving the treats till the car passes. He will come to associate cars with getting something good.

It might be that your dog is not used to the sounds that a car makes because different cars make different sounds. Or as a pup your dog might have been dramatized by the sound look or smell of a car.

you may have to start him out by moving farther away from the cars for a while if possible. move far enough away that it doesn't bother him.
after a while, move closer, each time rewarding him when he doesn't "freak". this may take a while. have lots of patience and love for him. for some reason the cars scare him a lot. poor baby.
i hope this works. maybe you could ask a professional too. :o)

Hmmm.. I would want him afraid of cars. My best friend's dog wasn't afraid of cars.....he ran out into the street one day and got hit. He didn't live. Having a dog be afraid of cars is a good thing.
