In order to pay for services including defense, social security, police and fire protection, etc. Personally I think the government should only be in the business of police and fire protection and defense of the homeland. Other than that, we have a myriad of laws and agencies who protect us from each other. I think we should open up the civil courts for this - instead of having useless agencies, we should allow citizens to openly sue corporations for wrongdoings without hindrance. That way corporations would make better products based on market conditions rather than government regulations.

Taxes pay for public services. How else do you expect these services get paid for?
