Is anybody at all actually concerned with anything more worthy and less superficial than possessions and designer clothes? I'm sick of feeling as though I haven't "made it" unless I have this house or this particular car. It all feels so shallow, pointless and banal. I'm sick of reading about the must have shoes or handbags or what this celebrity is wearing today. It makes me bored of living. I don't want to slave away just to earn to "exist" and not experience the important things in life. I could get myself a well paid job if I wanted and work in the city but nothing could sap my spirit as much as that! Anyone else feel remotely the same way? I get so depressed about it all. I feel like leaving the big city for a quiet, simple life sometimes instead of trying to "compete".

Not everyone is so materialistic. Seek spiritual happiness and all else won't matter.

I know what you mean, but these people are trying to make money, have a simple life ,it is the best life, and you dont have to be like everyone else, so everyone wants bags shoes, new ones every week, you dont have too, do that be simple and enjoy life, I see nice things in shop , and go back to have a look, im getting fed up , but the truth is im quite simple, and do enjoy myself, take a break, and trust me a few things in life will make you very happy, and you cant have every thing in life anyway , you cant have all the things you ever wanted in life , then really thats not life if you did ,do you see what I mean, earn your money and save it as much as you can only spend on what you really need, and start enjoying that peaceful known stressful life , and remember you cant have everything, then you 'll be quashed in your own bed lol

never compete never, youll always bee unhappy, this wrold is a competion thats why its no t happy

appearing successful is like a drug and business want to get you addicted to it because that keeps you consuming spending and causes growth which give more power to those few family's which run the world (sounding a bit paranoid now) the worst part is that if you step back and say I'm not doing it any more it not the people that are at the top which force you back its your friends, family and local officials. you cant live anymore without other people, how many people out their could even start a fire to keep themselves warm without a lighter or matches, this is the most basic technologies in the world and 99.9% of people living the west have no idea how to do it. if you want to leave the rat race the only option you have know are to turn to religions and philosophies this often provides the fulfilment modern life is lacking but is often taken to far and causes hatred. i believe that the only way to live in this life is to appear successful because we've forgotten how to live any other way

i wouldn't stress too much over this. material possesions don't have any bearing on if you make it or not. if you truely want to experience the important things in life you must first be aware of what they are. seeing Paris or flying first class or eating at 'the restaurant' are some of the least important things to do.
waking up and appreciating the shear fact that the sun has awoken us all to a new day or stopping to see the first drops of rain as they shimmer like diamonds on the ground under the sunlight. these are the important things as they help us to realise how much more is out there that we don't make the time to see anymore. you can be as successful as you want to be and maybe just maybe you can show someone else what it is to be.
peace!

Why the hell are you doing things that depress you.
I could have made a bomb when I was younger. I didn't want it, it didn't interest me. Everything I've got I own. No credit cards, no debts, I don't need much and I'm Happy.

I had my own Plumbing and Central Heating business, I would often leave a well paying job to go down the road and do a job for free for an OAP, or someone that couldn't afford it. or for a local church. NOT GOOD BUSINESS SENSE. Who cares I'm short of nothing and I'm happy.

Sounds like you need a break.

If you are serious the Good Book reminds us that 'man's life does not consist of possessions'. This is life eternal to know Jesus Christ'

Take a break for a few days and read John chapter 3 - find a Bible believing church.

Best wishes, James

Of course there's more to life than that. To me, being successful is finding something I enjoy, feel is a worthy calling, and do. But the way you talk about this situation, it seems like you actually do believe that success in life is determined by wealth. Otherwise, why would this be a problem for you?

I have long since realized the sheer stupidity of most people when it comes to possesion drive by fads and celebrities.

It is pointless, and pathetic. I used to get worked up over it when I would see it in tv or magazines. Now I just try to figure out ways to make money off those idiots.

The things of this earth are not important. The only riches you take with you when you die are the ones that are stored up in Heaven. The Bible says "do not store up treasures on earth" also "do not worry about what you will eat, or what you will wear, do not worry about tomorrow for today has enough worries of its own".

Matthew 19:16-24  Now, look! a certain one came up to him and said: “Teacher, what good must I do in order to get everlasting life?” 17 He said to him: “Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is that is good. If, though, you want to enter into life, observe the commandments continually.” 18 He said to him: “Which ones?” Jesus said: “Why, You must not murder, You must not commit adultery, You must not steal, You must not bear false witness, 19 Honor [your] father and [your] mother, and, You must love your neighbor as yourself.” 20 The young man said to him: “I have kept all these; what yet am I lacking?” 21 Jesus said to him: “If you want to be perfect, go sell your belongings and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven, and come be my follower.” 22 When the young man heard this saying, he went away grieved, for he was holding many possessions. 23 But Jesus said to his disciples: “Truly I say to YOU that it will be a difficult thing for a rich man to get into the kingdom of the heavens. 24 Again I say to YOU, It is easier for a camel to get through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to get into the kingdom of God.”

Jesus’ statement was not meant to be taken literally. He was using hyperbole to illustrate that just as a literal camel cannot go through the eye of an actual sewing needle, it is impossible for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom if he continues to cling to his riches and does not put Jehovah first in his life.—Luke 13:24; 1 Timothy 6:17-19.

The improtant thing in life is to STOP comparing yourself to all these other people. Your life is not measured against anyone else, only against what you choose to do, to achieve and to fail at in your life.

Those who are fixated on material nonsense as a 'mark of their success' are, in my opinion, lacking a personality. Let them get on with it!
