Breathing is part of the autonomic nervous system. Just like pumping blood, and digesting food. We do it without thinking about it. Breathing can be put on manual, for example when talking, or blowing up a balloon.

breathing, like our heart beat, is part of the autonomic nervous system. Our brain sends those messages automatically. In fact, you can't not breathe. You can maybe hold your breath until you pass out, but then you will simply start breathing again.
That is why people drown, they cannot stop the impulse to breathe, even tho under water, they suck water into their lungs instead of air, and lack of oxygen kills them.

Our brain automatically regulates certain essential life-sustaining bodily functions, such as breathing and heartbeat. We don't have to know how to do these things or ever even really think about them.

How do we know how to breathe, period? It's natural instinct. Is this a serious question or did you somehow fail to express yourself?

WELL, ACTUALLY WE DON'T, BUT OUR BODIES KNOW, AUTOMATICALLY. IF WE HAD TO ACTUALLY THINK OF BREATHING TO LIVE, WE'D NEVER SLEEP, AND WE'D DIE.
