Is atheism a religion or absence of one?

2006-10-30 08:14:33 · 39 answers · asked by laurie 2 in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

I was trying to make the question as modest and considerate as possible. But most have not even answered my question, just here to bash. Thanks for all the Christians/Non-Christians who answered in a polite manner.

I have often wondered this myself. Here is a great answer.

I saw this post. Can this be true? How?
Why do you assume an Atheist can't be spiritual?

First off...

Atheism: n, from the Greek a- without, theos- god. 1. the belief that there is no God. -- from the 2003 edition of Webster's dictionary.

In my opinion, that should be ammended to include any and all gods, but, close enough. So it's not a religion, it's a lack of a belief in God, so obviously it can't be a religion.

Far as why atheists are even here, well, you can't have belief without disbelief, so we have every right to be here. Secondly, some of us WERE believers before we renounced our former religions, so we DO have some knowledge of spirituality and religion, so there ARE religious questions we can answer without having to have a religion.

And even for those who weren't believers before, I'm sure some have studied religion on their own academically, so they, too, know enough about various religions to answer questions here as well. Others are probably here to share their experiences and debunk more than a few myths and generalizations about atheism.

Are you familiar with the term "new money"? it relatively is the syndrome wherein people who've recently come into great sums of money are relatively observed via people who've had it for a on a similar time as. nicely, there is yet another term: "new intelligence" it relatively is an sufficient description of a individual who has recently come right into somewhat greater education than their intelligence can cope with. those kinds of persons latch tenaciously onto atheism, and that they think of they are greater advantageous for doing so. they are knowledgeable previous their intelligence. those individuals are maximum in simple terms observed via the satisfaction they reveal of their atheism. many situations, after the waters calm and the greenness of the recent archives wears off, those human beings's intelligence catches lower back up with the quantity of archives they have been uncovered to, after which undemanding experience and severe thinking slowly start up coming lower back into play. fortuitously, maximum of them proceed to develop into mature agnostics, deists, or maybe theists in the event that they become extraordinarily vibrant. regrettably, besides the undeniable fact that, there are some that get caught interior the atheist rut like a broken checklist, and prefer Terri Schiavo, they never recuperate, and the plug would desire to be pulled.

Because we get tired of seeing Christian propaganda everywhere, and we try to post of few viewpoints that aren't Christian.

I agree with other posters that we are looking for a good arguement sometimes as well.

While many Christians seem to like to try to force their beliefs on everyone else, and tend to use religion as the answer for everything, atheists usually are are simply interested in discussing these topics objectively, trying to come up with all the possible answers.

Also, many Christians have this terrible habit of trying to undermine atheists by telling them they are bad people, they will burn in hell, etc. First of all, I don't know many atheists that would condemn a Christian in such a way. Second of all, this makes us feel the need to (although it seems futile) defend ourselves and try to convince Christians that atheists are not bad people, and we live our lives just as well as anyone else.

Also to answer the question about what atheism is, atheism means literally the "lack of theism" or "free from theism". That means if you lack any type of religious beliefs, you are an atheist.

On a fairly related note, I remember an acquaintance of mine asking me why I liked the movie "City of Angels", where the angel falls in love with Meg Ryan.

This friend couldn't comprehend how I, as an atheist, could watch, and worse, enjoy a movie about angels.

I've never forgotten that. That's how misunderstood we are, by so many theists.

The reason that I could watch that movie, and enjoy it, is for the same reason that I can watch and enjoy Spiderman, or Harry Potter, or Lord Of The Rings.

Enjoying a fun story about imaginary creatures does not imply a belief in them.

And discussing the mental health problems of people that believe in imaginary creatures does not imply a belief in them either. This is a forum, where I hope to cure people of this mental illness, by showing them ways out of it.

You'll find that most of us are here for that very reason.

Atheists are those who don't believe that God/s exist. Though I think, there are some people here, who are Agnostics, and not know its difference from Atheism. Agnosticism is just merely believing that there is a supreme being, you just have no full kowledge on who/what it is.

Simple difference. Agnostics are aware that there is a God, somewhere out there. Atheists don't believe in the existence of one at all.

Why do they post here? Probably for personal reasons.

Most of them want to believe in God but because of so many mistranslations in scriptures they are not satisfied with the answers. I know a lot of Atheists and Christians who came to Krishna consciousness because They found the original truth that made sense and they are now more spiritually advanced than the Christians. Read Your mean that's in the Bible by satyaraja das Show so many mistranslations and go to www.essene.org they have the truth on Christ and to the the above book go to www.krishnaculture.com

Why would you assume most are "proclaimed athiests"?
Personally, (this is a public forum) & I like seeing what others say, whether I agree or not. I feel awful for people who let others' comments hurt them or "shake " their "beliefs". Is it really so dangerous to be exposed to an opinion that differs with one's own?
You'll notice I didn't PROCLAIM ANYTHING except an interest....

Absence of religion, however, even without believing in the spiritual realm does not mean one cannot be spiritually aware. Thank you for playing, nice concealed way of saying, "go away."

Oh wait, I saw through it, so it wasn't all that well concealed.

1. Because they can.

2. Absence of one.

I'm here because Christians are trying to impose rules on non-Christians.

1. Efforts to prevent the legalization for same-sex marriage have come almost entirely from Christian groups.

2. Anti-homosexual rights efforts in general have been fostered by church groups. These groups are trying to find ways to re-criminalize homosexuality, which mirrors the efforts put forward in Nazi Germany.

3. Efforts by Christians to restrict women's control over their bodies by insisting that women are nothing more than incubators, slaves that are meant to carry any fertilized egg until it becomes a child.

4. Efforts to halt stem-cell research based on the assumption that fertilized eggs in fertility clinics are human and so have rights, even though they will be tossed out like yesterday's tuna.

5. Blindness to the torture of foreigners by the US government, a callous first for Christians in over 100 years.

6. The support by most protestant Christians for the death penalty, in spite of the damage it does to human morality because it suggests that killing is a just response to anything. (Why is it that I as an atheist feel like I have to preach higher morals to Christians?)

7. Efforts to turn science class into a religion class by attempting to insert intelligent design, a religious doctrine that cannot be tested via the scientific method, into science class.

8. The insistence that Christians have a higher standing in the universe than the rest of humanity.

9. The perpetuation of gender stereotypes within families, leading to the curtailment of women's choices and the prevention of children from having a full range of options available as they plan for adult lives. (For example, women can often not become ordained.)

10. The elevation of faith above rational thinking such that people are taught that their emotional responses supersede any rational thought.

These are enough reasons to keep Christians aware of the damage they do to those who choose not to join their faith.
