Depends on how the steak is cooked and seasoned.
If you are going to grill it with lots of fresh-ground pepper and chopped garlic, a good Cabernet Sauvegion will work very nice.

If you broil it and keep it simple, rubbed with some olive oil with a little salt, pepper and garlic powder, then a nice Pinot Noir goes well.

My budget-minded choices would be St. Supery, Guenoc or Hess for the Cab, and Schug, Sinskey or Adelsheim for the Pinot.

California Clos du Bois Cabernet If you can find one that's about 5 years old, open it and let it breath! mmmm very good inexpensive wine! Great with a steak!

A big red wine. Cabernet from California, shiraz from Australia, or Bordeaux from France.

Depends on the steak, But for me it would be a beautifully marbelled bone in Delmonico (Rib Eye) paired with a nice Cabernet. Stags Leap SLV is one of my very favorites.

a good spanish tempranillo depending on what you are serving with it. tempranillos are good with hearty basic foods like a steak/potato/soup/salad/bread dinner.

i think most merlots currently produced are next to awful -- nothing like what a merlot is supposed to be. try a pinot noir instead -- its a lighter red with a nice crisp bright flavor even in the more inexpensive varieties.

Clos du Val Pinot Noir. Any year. Or Dancing Bull Zinfandel by Rancho Zabaco. So smooth it'll be down your throat before you realize you've even swallowed it. :)
