It's not defined by the amount you drink or how long you spend drinking it, rather your dependence on it and inability to stop at will.

Although the above answers are correct, if you are asking what would it take for an average person to become physically dependent on alcohol, then the answer is about 2 weeks.
It varies for person to person, but any physical change, especially those dependent on outside stimuli are given a time frame of 2 weeks for the average person to recondition.
This could be for better or worse. Stop smoking - 2 weeks. Increased sex drive from better diet - 2 weeks. Develop a physical dependency on a substance - 2 weeks.

That's a myth. You don't have to drink everyday or drink for 20-30-40 years to be an alcoholic.
An alcoholic can drink on weekends only, twice a year...doesn't matter. They are alcoholics if every time they DO drink, they can't stop. And/or every time they get into trouble, they have been drinking....those are alcoholics, too.
Of course, if you ARE drinking every day and can't seem to stop (or every morning you say...."UGH...I am not going to drink today.." and then you get home and drink anyway.....THAT'S an alcoholic, too.

it's not how long you drink that makes you an alcoholic, it's when you feel like you need to drink that does

Can you function in life without it?
When alcohol starts to interfere with your life and take priority over everything else, then it's a problem.

I agree with the answer at the top. It's not a matter of time, it's a matter of dependence. There's no calendar for that.
