I'm naturally a brunette, but I would like to become a blonde, for a major change. Can I do this with a box color from the store, or do i need to go to a salon to have the brown coloring taken out?

~you really should not make such a drastic color change yourself, if you are a dark brunette, i suggest you go to a salon, and to gradually work your way to the blonde shade that you want. it's less damaging since you have to go for a touch-up in 4-6 weeks~

You can do this from a box or you can go to a salon. But if you are going to attempt to do this on your own or from a box, you need to know this. When you go to the store buy a 30 volumizer ( It adds lift tot the hair) bleach. The hair will go through 10 different stages of pigment (hair color) Fist degree is black, second dark brown, Third red brown,Fourth orange brown,Fifth orange red, sixth orange, seventh gold, eighth dark blonde, ninth light blonde, tenth pale blonde. So when you apply the bleach on the hair you will see you turn these colors in order. So watch out to figure what color you going for. And if you want to save money to go to a salon... Find a beauty school and they will charge you about $40 less than a real salon, but trust the students at beauty school will do just as good as a real beautician.

As a hairdresser PLEASE do not try this at home. You are going to screw your hair up.

What people don't understand is that it is always easy to go darker but it is a long and difficult process to go lighter especially brunette to blonde.

First you need to know that this is going to cause MAJOR damage to your hair. This is not like throwing on a box of color.

1. Your hair need to be bleached - which is very damaging to the hair.
2. Once the bleach has worked it's magic a toner will need to be applied to achieve the desired blonde shade you would like.

If you want to do this great but your hair is going to be so fried. Your really going to have to take the time to properly condition it and try not to use a blow dryer or curling iron.

If I were you I would meet this half way and get a ton of blonde highlights instead of doing my whole head. Eventually if you keep getting the highlights your hair will become blonder and blonder with each visit to the salon.

I did the same thing. I learned that it's not as healthy for your hair to use the box product. Professionals can judge how fine your hair is, and how much breakage you'll get when they use bleach. This can help them choose the kind of dye for you - there's all sorts of different kinds and levels. Their suggestions are so helpful.

It's a drastic change and can take a few visits to get it to the level you want - doing it all at one point will leave you with too much breakage.

My advice is to visit a salon. It's worth it.

My mom went from dark brown to blonde. She goes to a salon and says that they bleach the color out and then darken it with the shade of blonde that she wants. I assume that this could be done with a store purchase of hair bleach AND hair color. If you know someone who went from brown to blonde, ask him/her.

You'll just end up wasting time and money if you try to do it from a box. Definitely go to a salon.

if you use the box coloring on your hair it will depend on dark brown your hair already is. if your hair is really dark the color on the box may turn out to be darker on your hair. my opinion would have it professionaly done but that's expensive
