Yes you can.

What you can't do is run most low energy (flourescent) bulbs with a dimmer.... but a dimmer and timer don't work the same.

A timer yes, a dimmer no - as it will just flicker on anything less than max power.

(I suspect that you are getting confused with the fact that you should not use them - or "normal" flourescent lights - with a dimmer switch.)
