If it's worth possibly ruining your friendship over then go ahead- Once you date a best friend and say you break up- you lose a best friend.
I can't count how many people I know that have gone out with thier best friends and it didn't work out and they don't even talk anymore.
If it works out fantastic but best friends are best friends for a reason- you love em as a friend but there wasn't enough chemistry there to make you date each other in the first place.
